Chimney Rendering & Lead Flashing Replacement in Chelmsford
For this project in Chelmsford, Pickett Roofing were asked to restore a badly weathered chimney that had been causing damp issues inside the property. The stack was in poor condition, with failing render and deteriorated leadwork, so a full refurbishment was required.
Project Overview
Location: Chelmsford, Essex
Service: We carried out a complete overhaul of the chimney, which involved applying new render on the chimney stack with a scratch coat and finish, and installing new lead around the base for long-term protection.
✔ Step 1 — Removing Old Render & Preparing the Stack
The existing render was loose, cracked and no longer waterproof, so we removed it back to the bare brickwork. After cleaning down the chimney, we prepared the surface for a fresh render system.
✔ Step 2 — Scratch Coat Application
A full scratch coat was applied to stabilise the structure and ensure a strong mechanical bond for the top coat. This is a crucial step for preventing future cracking and maintaining durability in all weather conditions.
✔ Step 3 — Smooth Top Coat Render Finish
We then applied a new finish coat, giving the chimney a clean, solid and weather-resistant exterior. This fresh render not only strengthens the chimney but also greatly improves its appearance.
✔ Step 4 — New Lead Flashings & Back Gutter
The old lead was worn and ineffective, so we replaced it with new lead apron flashing, new side flashings, and a new lead back gutter tray. All leadwork was neatly dressed, fixed into the brick chase, and sealed to modern roofing standards to ensure a perfect watertight finish.
Final Result
The rebuilt chimney now looks smart, performs effectively, and is fully protected against water penetration. With new render, a proper scratch coat and finish, and new leadwork, this Chelmsford property now has a chimney that will stand up to the elements for many years ahead.
